As the concern over plastic waste continues to rise in the U.S., a recent survey of 1,500 American consumers has shed light on growing support for compostable packaging, particularly in California, New York, and Washington. These states are leading the charge in the movement towards more sustainable packaging solutions, with a marked difference in attitudes between the West Coast and the East Coast.
The survey revealed that a significant 84% of Americans are increasingly concerned about the amount of plastic waste generated by packaging. This sentiment is especially pronounced on the West Coast, where California and Washington show higher levels of apprehension compared to their East Coast counterparts. This regional variation highlights the heightened environmental awareness on the West Coast, where consumers are more vocal in their concerns about the environmental impact of plastic waste.
As consumers become more eco-conscious, there has been a noticeable shift towards compostable packaging as an alternative to traditional plastic. The survey found that a substantial portion of consumers in California, New York, and Washington prefer compostable options over conventional or recyclable plastic materials. Specifically, 54% of Californians, 57% of New Yorkers, and 64% of Washington residents expressed a preference for compostable packaging.
Despite the benefits of compostable materials, consumer awareness remains a challenge. While many are familiar with recycled packaging, compostable alternatives are less well-known. Reusable packaging, though increasingly popular, remains third in consumer preference behind recycled and compostable options.
Over half of Americans consider eco-friendly packaging alternatives essential in their daily lives. This sentiment is particularly strong in California (60%), Washington (56%), and New York (55%). The survey also revealed a strong willingness to pay a premium for sustainable packaging: 75% of respondents in California, 71% in New York, and 72% in Washington are willing to pay an additional 5% for products using sustainable packaging over traditional plastic options. This growing demand signals a clear shift towards eco-friendly packaging solutions and emphasizes the increasing consumer preference for compostable materials.
This shift is taking place within the context of a rapidly growing global packaging market. The rigid plastic packaging segment, in particular, is seeing significant growth. The global rigid plastic packaging market was valued at USD 310.65 billion in 2023 and is predicted to attain USD 614.65 billion by 2034, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% from 2024 to 2034. This expansion reflects the increasing demand for durable, versatile, and cost-effective packaging, but also underscores the growing call for more sustainable alternatives.

The rise in demand for sustainable packaging is reshaping the competitive landscape in the rigid plastic packaging industry. Historically popular due to its durability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness, rigid plastic packaging must now contend with the growing consumer demand for more sustainable options. Companies looking to differentiate themselves must invest in research and development to create biodegradable or recyclable materials that meet these evolving consumer preferences.
Technological advancements are also playing a key role in driving innovation in packaging materials and manufacturing processes. As companies focus on developing eco-friendly alternatives, they are also leveraging smart packaging solutions and innovative manufacturing processes to stay ahead of the competition. This technological progress is enabling businesses to offer cutting-edge packaging solutions that align with sustainability goals.
Additionally, businesses must stay attuned to market trends and shifting consumer preferences. As eco-consciousness becomes more central to packaging design, companies are reevaluating their supply chains to optimize efficiency and reduce costs while delivering environmentally friendly products.
As the demand for sustainable packaging grows, industry leaders are making strategic moves to align their offerings with consumer expectations. In April 2024, Thimmaiah Napanda, the MD and CEO of Manjushree Technopack Limited, emphasized the company’s commitment to quality delivery and value, reinforcing its position in the competitive packaging industry.
In October 2024, Vaseline announced the launch of a new recyclable pump for its pump-action bottles in North America, reflecting the company’s commitment to reducing plastic waste. Furthermore, in March 2024, Ayr Emmer Ltd. unveiled a 17.5-litre rigid plastic packaging container, underscoring the growing trend towards sustainable packaging solutions across various industries.
