The global poultry packaging market, valued at approximately USD 2.98 billion in 2022, is projected to grow to USD 4.87 billion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% from 2023 to 2032.

The poultry packaging market is undergoing significant transformation, particularly in Europe, where packers and retailers are adopting more sustainable and innovative packaging solutions to meet evolving consumer preferences and address environmental concerns related to food and packaging waste. This shift has led to a move away from traditional polypropylene (PP) packaging in favor of more sustainable alternatives, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
The poultry industry, like many others, is also influenced by global events, including climate change and geopolitical tensions. While the market showed signs of recovery following the pandemic, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine has slowed commercial activity, particularly in Europe, affecting the overall growth of the industry.
Europe’s role in the global poultry packaging market became more prominent in 2023, when the region emerged as the second-largest market. European companies have been quick to embrace new packaging technologies to adapt to changing consumer demands and market conditions.
For example, in February 2024, IFCO, the world’s largest manufacturer of reusable packaging containers (RPCs), based in Germany, acquired BEPCO, a leading provider of reusable packaging solutions for the meat and dairy sectors.
Plastic remains the most commonly used material in poultry packaging, with PET overtaking PP due to its numerous benefits. Although PET has been used for a while, packers and retailers are only now fully appreciating its advantages. PET offers superior gas barrier performance compared to PP, making it more effective at preserving the freshness of poultry products. Its clarity and shine also make it more visually appealing, which adds to the product’s attractiveness on retail shelves.
Another key advantage of PET is its environmental benefits. Recycled PET (rPET), often used in poultry packaging, typically contains more than 95% post-consumer recycled material, aligning with sustainability goals. PET’s strong gas barrier properties help extend the shelf life of poultry, reducing food waste across the supply chain, from retailers to consumers.
The shift from polypropylene to PET in poultry packaging reflects the industry’s commitment to sustainability. Retailers are also increasingly focused on value-added packaging that prioritizes convenience, creative designs, and eye-catching graphics to boost poultry sales.
For example, in May 2022, TekniPlex Consumer Products introduced a range of 100% PET processor trays made from 50% post-industrial recycled content, designed to address key challenges in poultry packaging while offering superior product display quality.
Bags play an essential role in the poultry packaging industry, offering an efficient solution for storing, transporting, and presenting poultry products. These bags come in various materials, such as plastic, paper, and woven fabrics, each with distinct advantages. Plastic bags, particularly polyethylene, are commonly used for packaging individual portions due to their moisture resistance and ability to preserve product freshness.
Paper bags, on the other hand, are typically used for bulk packaging, such as whole poultry or larger cuts. Woven bags made from materials like jute or polypropylene are ideal for packaging frozen poultry due to their strength and insulation properties.
In February 2023, Harpak-ULMA, a leading provider of intelligent packaging solutions, introduced ULMA’s Tight-Bag™ machines for poultry products across North America. This new technology automates vacuum bagging by combining vertical bagging with a unique air extraction method, offering a more efficient and effective way to package poultry.
