Plant-Based Packaging News Upfield Introduces Plastic-Free, Recyclable Tub Packaging for Plant-Based Spreads

Upfield, a leading producer of plant-based spreads, is launching a groundbreaking initiative to tackle plastic waste by introducing plastic-free and recyclable tub packaging for its products. Developed in collaboration with Footprint, MCC, Pagès Group, and Emsur, this innovation aims to replace over 25,000 tons of plastic annually.

The new tubs are made from compressed wet paper fibers sourced from a certified supplier, ensuring they are waterproof and oil-resistant without the need for a plastic liner. As a result, they can be recycled in local paper waste streams, with verification from a prominent European recycling company.

Furthermore, the tubs have obtained Conventional Plastic Free certification and are on track to achieve home compostability certification by 2025.

Initially launching in Austria under the Flora Plant brand in late 2023, the transition will extend to other Upfield brands such as Rama and BlueBand. Upfield aims to replace up to two billion plastic tubs by 2030 and reduce plastic usage across its portfolio by 80% within the same timeframe.

David Haines, Group CEO of Upfield, emphasized the company’s commitment to making a positive environmental impact. He stated, “When we established Upfield, innovating our way out of plastic tubs was our moon-shot, and I am very proud of all Upfielders who contributed to this success.”

Karina Cerdeira, head of Packaging at Upfield, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the development of the paper-based tubs and expressed optimism about future innovations in sustainable packaging.

Yoke Chung, co-founder and Chief Technology & Innovation Officer of Footprint, emphasized the importance of partnership in achieving sustainability goals and praised the introduction of the first oil-resistant paper tub for plant-based spreads.

The initiative follows Flora’s recent brand identity unification, reflecting its commitment to providing plant-based alternatives to dairy butter. Additionally, Sirane has expanded its ‘Earth Packaging’ range with a plastic-free, recyclable butter wrap made from paper, offering various barrier options.

Overall, Upfield’s initiative represents a significant step towards reducing plastic waste in packaging and promoting sustainability in the food industry.
