In a remarkable stride towards sustainable operations, Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe) has recently unveiled its latest initiative – a cutting-edge rooftop solar energy plant installed atop its facility in Irvine, Scotland. This innovative endeavor marks a significant milestone in AGP-Europe’s commitment to environmental stewardship and underscores its dedication to reducing carbon emissions.
The newly installed solar installation is poised to revolutionize energy consumption at the Irvine facility, generating on-site renewable electricity and making substantial contributions to the local power grid. Comprising a state-of-the-art 1.75MWp solar PV system with 3842 panels strategically positioned across two warehouse roofs, this innovative infrastructure is projected to produce approximately 1.584MWh of electricity annually.
AGP-Irvine’s rooftop solar energy plant is anticipated to yield far-reaching environmental benefits, mitigating the release of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) into the atmosphere. It is estimated that this initiative will eliminate the equivalent of an impressive 356 tonnes of CO2e per year, marking a substantial reduction in the facility’s carbon footprint.
As part of Ardagh Group’s overarching sustainability strategy, this initiative aligns with the company’s ambitious goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity usage by 2030. By harnessing the power of solar energy, AGP-Europe aims to lead by example in the transition towards cleaner, more sustainable manufacturing practices.
Graeme Shepherd, Plant Director at AGP-Irvine, expressed enthusiasm for the solar installation, emphasizing its role in advancing the sustainability agenda while upholding uncompromising standards of quality and excellence. This sentiment was echoed by Annelene Ikemann, Sustainability Director at AGP-Europe, who highlighted the project’s significance in driving decarbonization efforts across the organization.
The implementation of rooftop solar energy plants represents just one facet of Ardagh Group’s multifaceted approach to sustainability. Building upon the success of the Irvine installation, AGP-Europe plans to replicate this model across its production facilities throughout Europe, further solidifying its position as a trailblazer in sustainable manufacturing practices.
