Trends in Confectionery Packaging

Eco-friendly and Sustainable Packaging

Consumers are increasingly demanding packaging that is sustainable and eco-friendly, such as materials made from paper, cardboard, and plant-based plastics. Confectionery manufacturers are responding by using lightweight materials and optimizing package sizes to reduce waste. There’s a growing trend toward packaging that can be easily recycled or composted, aligning with consumers’ desire for environmentally friendly options.

Convenience for Consumers

Packaging that is easy to use and convenient for on-the-go consumption is gaining popularity. Resealable, easy-to-open, and portioned packaging formats cater to consumers looking for practicality and portion control. This trend reflects the need for packaging that fits into busy lifestyles while offering convenience.

Improved Product Presentation

Packaging is no longer just functional; it’s about making products visually appealing. Consumers are drawn to eye-catching and innovative packaging designs. Transparent packaging is especially popular, as it allows consumers to see the product inside, building trust and highlighting its quality. Interactive packaging, such as designs incorporating augmented reality or QR codes, is also catching attention. Customizable packaging with personalized messages adds a unique touch that resonates with consumers.

Plastic’s Role in Confectionery Packaging

Plastic continues to dominate as the preferred material for confectionery packaging, particularly in flexible forms. Its versatility offers benefits such as grease resistance, durability, printability, and excellent preservation. Plastics like polyethylene protect products from moisture, and polypropylene is becoming increasingly popular for its rigidity and clarity, although challenges with sealability remain. To address these, creative solutions like vinyl coatings are being used.

The shift away from traditional materials like aluminum foil and waxed paper is happening as plastic films and laminates gain traction. This change is driven by the superior qualities of plastic, which offers better flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and improved product protection.

In the packaging of chocolate bars, horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS) machines are commonly used, wrapping individual bars in materials like polyester and oriented polypropylene (OPP). These materials can be further enhanced with pearlized or metallized finishes, improving both product appearance and longevity.

Recent Developments in the Confectionery Packaging Market

  • In June 2024, Saica Group and Mondelèz launched a new paper-based product designed to be recyclable within the paper waste stream. This packaging targets multipack items in the chocolate, biscuit, and confectionery markets, and is designed to meet sustainability criteria set by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).
  • In October 2023, Adapa Group introduced Paper Twister, a new paper-based twist-wrap packaging solution for confections and sweets, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional packaging materials.
